On Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at 6:30 p.m., Intersections is hosting a book discussion with author Joy Ladin about her book The Soul of the Stranger: Reading God and Torah from a Transgender Perspective.
Joy is a widely published poet, literary scholar and author. She holds the David and Ruth Gottesman Chair in English at Stern College for Women at Yeshiva University and is the first openly transgender professor at an Orthodox Jewish institution.
The Soul of the Stranger is a truly unique work of Torah exegesis: Academically rich while at the same time easily accessible and beautifully written, it offers a perspective on the Torah that illuminates and transforms our understanding of "the other," providing people of all Abrahamic faith traditions a new framework for understanding our relationship to the stranger among us and, ultimately, to God. Joy’s take on some of the best-known stories in the Torah through the lens of transgender experience presents nonconformity and transcension of gender roles and societal expectations as opportunities to understand a God who similarly defies human categories.
We look forward to introducing Joy's extraordinary work not only to transgender individuals or those who struggle with the gender binary (which according to Joy's perspective and the understanding Intersections promotes with our "Believe Out Loud" program ultimately includes most, if not all human beings), but also to theologians, ministers and other faith leaders. The Soul of the Stranger offers insight and guidance for everyone whose work, ministry or calling involves issues of marginalization and exclusion of those who are deemed too different or foreign to live among us.
Joy will read excerpts of the book for about 30 minutes, followed by a facilitated discussion with the audience.
